Description
This is our 6th Anniversary coffee.
It is not news to any of our regulars, that natural Ethiopian coffees are dear to us. We try to never have a time where we are without a coffee with some fermented funk to it, and probably half the calendar year, it’s Ethiopian Natural coffees with their varied berry and fruit flavors (occurring naturally, not as a result of our roasting processes.) This coffee is the epitome of that.
Normally when we inspect the green coffee from a natural Ethiopian lot, there’s a softer sort of jolly rancher-esque fruit aroma to the green coffee. This differs greatly from the aromas of naturals/Perla Negra from Central and South America. There, we tend to get a yogurt sort of lactic / acetic note (in a pleasant way) along with the fruit. That tends to point a finished coffee toward a more wine-like taste in extraction. Also a real delight for us. We like it weird.
This coffee has both. There’s a blueberry yogurt aroma to the green coffee, and the finished coffee has a little bit more of the tart vibe to it than we’ve ever had with a conventional African raised bed natural. The real surprise to us, however, is how floral the nose is on this one. It’s a superstar.
This isn’t a coffee I would French Press or cold toddy. And the standard roast of this coffee that we have in bags (as in, the iteration we think tastes best on filter coffee) is too bright for espresso unless you have an extremely capable rig. We are happy to provide you with our espresso roast of this coffee instead, as long as we have any available… just send an email.
This is a coffee for manual brewing, in my opinion. It will be great on an automatic drip if you’re sharing, bit I don’t think I’d aim to drink a liter of it in a sitting… I’d want something more classic and less in-your-face. But this is a coffee you need to try. We have it available for pourover at the shop, and in bags while it lasts.
It should be about $8 more expensive, so while I know it’s a pricey coffee, we have definitely done as much as we can possibly do to make an anniversary coffee accessible to as many people as possible. You probably won’t find this coffee anywhere else, and you definitely won’t find it anywhere else for less. On to year 7!
